Electronic tools for the Humanities

As I often recommend to friends and colleagues a number of open-source electronic tools, I thought I might as well describe them here for reference. I will use the term ‘electronic tools’ in a broad sense, though I will refer only to those which can be used with/on a computer and which are handy for those working in the Humanities.

I will eschew references to programs dealing with image manipulation, web development, sound/image playback and the like, and concentrate on basic ‘internet’ and word processing tools.
